On the afternoon of October 8, U.S. local time, Liu He, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Vice Premier of the State Council, and Chinese leader of the China-U.S. Comprehensive Economic Dialogue, led a delegation to Washington and will hold a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin. A new round of high-level Sino-US trade consultations.
The new round of high-level economic and trade consultations will undoubtedly bring opportunities to ease the tense Sino-US economic and trade frictions that have been tense for some time. As the world's top two economies, how the trade war continues to escalate, the bigger the more tense, is a huge harm to the United States, China, and the world. Recently, the U.S. economy and the world economy have been flashing red lights frequently.
The last round of consultations ended on July 31. Over the past 60 days, there have been ups and downs. As soon as a consensus was reached in the negotiations, the United States turned around and announced that it would impose tariffs on Chinese goods, listing China as a currency manipulator, and China had to take countermeasures. The escalating trade war has not brought benefits to the US economy, but has pushed itself to the brink of recession. In fact, only through dialogue and cooperation can differences be eliminated.
In September, China and the United States frequently exchanged goodwill. The United States has postponed imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, and China supports relevant companies in purchasing a certain amount of soybeans, pork and other agricultural products from the United States. A series of positive interactions show that both sides are looking forward to easing the trade war through negotiations.
From September 19 to 20, the economic and trade teams of China and the United States held consultations at the vice-ministerial level in Washington and held constructive discussions on economic and trade issues of common concern.
Can substantive progress be made in the new round of consultations? This is what all parties are most concerned about. Just as the Chinese economic and trade delegation left for the United States, the United States announced that 28 Chinese government and commercial institutions would be included in the "entity list" to impose export controls on these entities, and to impose visa restrictions on Chinese officials involved in Xinjiang. The renewed maximum pressure by the United States has made the upcoming high-level consultations more complicated.
Equality and mutual respect are the prerequisites for consultations, the consensus reached by both sides, and the attitude and position that China has always adhered.
China has repeatedly stressed that both sides of the negotiations must respect each other's core interests and major concerns, not challenge the "bottom line", not cross the "red line", not at the expense of one party's right to development, let alone undermine a country's sovereignty. On issues concerning China's sovereignty and dignity, China must resolutely safeguard its core interests.
The new round of trade negotiations expects the United States to show real sincerity and action and look forward to better progress.
